When printing from a computer and using a serial port, if you get the 'Failed to Open Serial Port' error, that usually means that you have two or more serial printers or devices (Palm Pilot, modem, printer, etc.) installed, both using the same COM port. When the PC booted up, the Windows Print Spooler initialized one printer or device that will not let go of the port to allow you to use the printer you are currently trying to use and is configured to use the same COM (serial) port. There are a few resolutions to this error: 1.) Change your printer to a different port (for example, instead of using COM1, try COM2 - be sure to physically change the cable and make sure the port settings, like Baud Rate and Flow Control, are set correctly for the printer being used).
